Hello and Welcome Back... For Those Who Are New To This Site (Bonus Album Of The Week)
Each tape tells a story about what was happening in my life as a young boy growing up in Campbelltown, South West of Sydney in Australia in the 80sThis is Tape 9
The year was 1989 and I had turned 19, Time for a new job
In started work at a Air Conditioning company called 'Dricon (Diamond Air)' and had to catch a train to Strathfield at 4am, Bus to Enfield to start at 6.30am. I would ride my bike to Campbelltown and leave it at a ex-girlfriends house and make a mad dash to the station, 15mins away.
I didn't mind the traveling, sure it killed my social life but it was still fun. I would finish work at 3pm and catch the diesel train home at 4pm. (only stopped at 1 station then i was home) I used to walk from Enfield to Strathfield in 1 hour flat. Fridays was good because i got to finish at 12.30pm so a few workmates would meet at Platform 9 for a few drinks.
At Strathfield railway station, there are only 8 platforms while the pub was called platform 9.
I wasn't a huge drinker, but one day it came back to haunt me. I fell asleep on the train and ended up in Mittagong which was around 1.5 hours from home and no trains. $150 later in taxi fares and i was finally home... Didn't do that again.
Then came the day that would change my life forever.
September 7th 1989
That was the day I died twice. While riding to the station at 3.30am, I was hit by a car at 80kmph.
It was a cold morning. I had my thick state rail jacket on that my dad had given me. My AIWA walkman was tucked under my jacket as the song 'Rocket - by Def Leppard' started to play.
Heading down the same road that i had done so many times before, I had noticed that there was a car that had gone thru the set of lights half way down the road, the lights were green. Normally i would have to wait 5 mins before the lights would change. I picked up speed powering down the road when the lights started to change... Orange.. RED
The lights seemed to change really quickly and I was still hammering towards the intersection. I started to brake when i realized, 'i'm not going to make the green light', as the road slanted down before the intersection and it was wet.
'Shit, i'm going too fast' was my thought.. I gripped the brake handles as hard as i could as the back wheel started to slide on the wet road while putting my feet on the road to try and stop in time, only i did stop and in half a second it took to notice, i had stopped in the first lane of oncoming traffic.
I looked towards my right as the view of approaching car headlights as they got closer as everything seemed to stop and go in slow motion. The sound of smashing glass surrounded my ears where my headphones were as I slid onto the bonnet of the car, my back going thru the windshield and then nothing. While passed out, the dashboard fell into the drivers lap as my bike went through the radiator fan.
All this happened in a space of 2 seconds
I was thrown 23metres (about 2 blocks) from the point of impact and I landed heavily on the road.
Me, hitting the road with such force that it broke my pelvis in 4
places, broke my collar bone, dislocated my left shoulder, broke my nose
and tore my urethra (from the bladder out).
I remember laying on the road shivering with the sounds of 'Def Leppard - Rocket' still playing on my Walkman (nice one AIWA).
Laying on the road, It was freezing... The force of the impact ripped my shoes from my feet and in the distance, the sound of an arriving ambulance.
Then I Died.
I remember feeling pure euphoria, surrounded by a white light... Just floating in this white light.
It lasted for, what felt like 30 seconds when suddenly i was back, with
the smiling face of an ambulance officer looking down at me
I was greeted by a 'Welcome Back'.
From then, I was airlifted by the Careflight Helicopter, from Campbelltown to Liverpool Hospital for 2 operations, then airlifted again to Westmead for another operation, then back to Liverpool where i was to spend 4 months laying in a hospital bed to try and fix my broken pelvis.
But it wasn't over.Blood was still leaking into my abdomen.
When the pelvis broke, it severed my blood supply to my legs and bled into my abdomen and testicles (my testicles were the size of a football)...I kid you not.
Off for another operation. This 4th operation was to be the second time that I Died.
The same beautiful feeling and white light, this time it lasted longer.
34 blood transfusions later, I was back. (just)
I was to spend 4 months laying on my back while my pelvis glued itself back together..
Me, still smiling (sort of)
Aaaaand, Thats where this Mixtape comes into it
While laying on my back going insane from the pain, i would listen and record various songs, mostly from Triple J Saturday Night Request show on the radio..
One good thing about contracting 'Golden Staph Infection' (nearly killed me...again) is that, i got a room all by myself... yay.
So Here It Is, my Mixtape I did while I was in Hospital. (and a bit when I got home)
