CHRISTMAS, 1985 & TRIPLE M / DOUG MULRAY (A Look At The 80s)

Hello and Welcome Back... One month till Christmas, man, that has come around so fast..

I was thinking this morning, while eating breakfast, how different Christmas time was in the 80s as opposed to now. I'll say it now, I love Christmas, its a magic time of the year..

One of my most fav Christmas memory's is Christmas 1984, the year i got my first Walkman and as I switched it on for the fist time, hearing FM stereo. You see, in 1984, FM stereo was new, very new. Every radio station pretty much broadcast in mono and only a select few in stereo but no-one could afford a FM receiver, well, I couldn't. So, here I was, standing on my parents porch, hot as hell.

9am and it was already 27c in East Campbelltown, NSW and a top temp of 35c ? for Christmas day

The first station i tuned to on my new Walkman was Triple M (MMM) and the song 'Band Aid - Feed The World' was playing.. Wow.

Triple M was the station to listen to. (2SM - Rock Of The 80s on AM band) The Triple M logo was a winged beast playing a guitar which sounded wicked on my walkman.

TRIPLE M THEME

TV AD 1981 Triple M

One thing set Triple M apart from the other FM radio stations in Sydney and that was a man called 'Doug Mulray'.

'Uncle Doug' was the breakfast DJ that everyone listen to.. Why?

Because he didn't just do music, he did voices, lots of characters voices, from a gypsy fortune teller called 'Madam Zenda' who took a dislike to Scorpio starsigns, 'Bogdan' the turnip boy & his girlfriend 'Danuta' (half woman , half beetroot), 'Roland Rolladoor' from Roland Rolladoor Rolladoors and 'Gloria', a gay socialite. Soo many characters it was like listening to a variety show.

Triple M even did a Christmas song in 1985

Everything 'Doug Mulray' did in the 80s and early 90s turned to gold. He even did a song call 'You Are Soul' (You Asshole) Take a Listen

Gotta remember that this was the 80s. We gave as good as we got, well, least here in Australia.

Life was fun. We didn't take each other so seriously.

I seen a behind the scenes of the Triple M morning breakfast show and it always started at 5am with a bottle of bubbly, it was acceptable back then.

A small clip of 'Madam Zenda' (Doug Mulray)

Sadly, 'Uncle Doug' as everyone called him passed away in 2023..

So this got me thinking as Christmas rounds the corner, 40 or so years later.

Triple M is now a shell of what it used to be.

Nobody can laugh at anymore in case we upset someone. Nobody can joke anymore in case we hurt their feelings. I think back to the 80s and the fun times we had, I really miss those days.

Today, its just sterile environment with billionaires who think they own the world and everyone in it.

I feel that if it wasn't for the amount of money shops make, Christmas would be wiped out like firecracker night and in 10-20 years time, nobody would remember what Christmas in the 80s was like.

I miss those days and wish, just for one day i could go back to Christmas 1984, see my grandparents who have passed one last time, pat my dog (Lady - german shepard) who i used to play football with, and has now passed.

At least we still have music from the 80s (and movies, although they seem to be slowly disappearing)...

Anyone have a time machine I could borrow? Pleeeeese
