SHM CD - WHATS IS A SHM CD?

 Hello and Welcome Back.. This Week on Electronic80s, We Take a Listen to Japanese SHM CDs

So What Is A SHM CD?

A SHM (Super High Material) CD is a 2007 Japanese invention that uses plastics similar to those made in LCD screens so the laser in the CD player has an easier task reading the information on the Disc (see pic below) also doesn't scratch as easy as conventional CDs..

SHM CDs are similar to SACD (Super Audio CDs) with a better build...

The result is an almost 'glass' like top coated disc that gives the disc a mirror like finish... (see below)

 

The new discs are also remastered from original master's.. whether it be from audio tapes, metal press platters or digital copies to produce a sound that, as they claim... Closer to the original source like no other..

But How does it sound?

That's the million dollar question, some people love them, some people don't like them... i mean, its remastered, so the usual volume wars are evident.. I guess it depends on who the audio engineer is and how good they are...

And, they are bloody expensive.. Here in Australia, where anything remotely good is priced to kill, a look on Ebay sees SHM CDs sell for $70 - $150 depending on how popular the album is... That's alot of money to spend on a CD...

So, on Electronic80s, we are going to check out whether the sound of a SHM CD is worth the effort, worth shelling out, close to $100 on a CD...

Also, most of this weeks SHM CDs on Electronic80s are in 24bit FLAC Format, just so it keeps it pristine sound..
