PLASTIC BERTRAND - ca plane pour moi ( lost hit )

Hello and welcome back...Just outside the 80s was this strange song.
Sang by Belgian musician Roger Allen Francois Jouret ( aka Plastic Bertrand ) in 1978.
He started his career in music as a drummer in the band "The Bisons" playing Rolling Stone covers.

O.k here's the bad news, Plastic Bertrand didn't actually sing this, The song "Ca Plane Pour Moi" was recorded in a studio and was sung and produced by Lou Deprijck.
For his efforts "Plastic Bertrand" received only 0.5% of the song royalties (Milli Vanilli anyone )...Still its a great song and even better when had one too many to drink and you try to sing the lyrics...English translation is interesting... goes something like "Wham Bam my Splash Cat",  least everyone knows the chorus... Oooo-ooo-ooo-ooo

SHONA LAING - drive baby drive ( lost hit )

Hello and welcome back...This song taken from her 1987 album is one of my favourite songs, its the kind of song i could listen to at 1am in the morning driving down the freeway in the rain.
New Zealand born Shona Laing has the voice of honey, with lyrics you can sing to.
An excellent song.

"Drive baby drive" was taken from the album "South" and also includes the hit 'glad I'm not a Kennedy".
This album was re-released in America in 1988.

Hello and welcome back...OMD first single was back in 1979 with the song "Electricity", a quirky synth driven song that would start this band to one of the best loved bands of the 80s.

Going under the banner of "New Wave" this band from England U.K was founded by Andy McCluskey (vocals, synth, bass guitar) and Paul Humphreys (vocals, synths) later adding Malcolm Holmes (drums, percussion ) and Martin Cooper (synths , sax ).

The best of OMD includes hits like "Enola gay", "tesla girls", "if you leave", "we love you" and my pick of the album "dreaming". which basically sums up my teenage years in the 80s, I quote the chorus from "dreaming" =
 I was only Dreaming
 I was only trying to catch your eye
 I was only wishing you would notice me
Instead you said "goodbye".

So, so true.

ENERGY 52 - cafe del mar ( dj kid paul mix ) ( lost hit )

Hello and welcome back.. Shortly after the 80's, Acid (Music not the drug :)) was introduced, a type of music know as trance was also becoming popular.
Blend acid and dance, and one of the best songs I think was this song by "Energy 52 - Cafe del mar"
This song came out around 1993 and has a slathering of remixes that would make you dizzy but this one called the "DJ Kid Paul Mix" has to be my favorite.
There is 2 parts to this song, the first is classic synth trance & the second part which starts around 4.55 is more of a moody sweeping trance.
Sounds incredible on a set of headphones. Hope you enjoy.

EDDIE MURPHY - party all the time ( lost hit )

Hello and welcome back... When actors decide to start a singing career it will either work or it will fail. David Hasselhoff tried and failed with "hooked on a feeling" ( well, i didn't like it ) but Kylie Minogue was pretty good. Eddie Murphy's attempt is pretty good depending on who you ask.. I like this song, its snappy, upbeat and a feel good song with guest appearances from Rick James ( the dude with the golden locks ). This song was also written and produced by Rick so it was only fitting he was in the video."Party all the time" was let loose on the general population in 1985 and went straight to no2 on the U.S music charts. In 1989 Eddie had a minor hit with" put your mouth on me" which sounded like a cross between Prince and Milli Vanilli. ( my opinion )
To keep the vibe going in 2006 the band "Deep Dish" did a dance version of the song know as P.A.T.T. ( party all the time ).  Brilliant sounds.

THE DAMNED - eloise ( lost hit )

Hello and welcome back... Originally sung by a 60s singer ( Barry Ryan ) the song Eloise gave "The Damned" a 1986 no 3 chart hit in the U.K.
The strange thing about this song is that it was never on any studio album, just a single only.
I remember hearing this song on radio and instantly liking the tune, brought it on vinyl the next day. The funny thing was that after this song came out alot of babies in 1986 that were named "Eloise" ( true fact ).

COCK ROBIN - just around the corner ( lost hit )

Hello and welcome back... I like the sound of this song, i heard it on 977-the 80s channel ( internet radio ) a few nights ago and fell in love with it. I'll admit i have never heard of this band before but this song is a mix of human emotion, great voice and smooth melodies. This song is from the 1987 album "After here through midland" which managed a no4 in France on the music charts.The band "Cock Robin" is an American band but were fairly popular in Europe.
The band was named after a 17th century story titled "The Marriage of Cock Robin and Jenny Wren". An Excellent song, I kinda expected the guy singing in the video to start crying at the end.  A Power ballad at its best. Enjoy.

A SONG TO WATCH
Still in the ballad department, i thought i would share this new song i found myself listening to and can't stop playing. Again another band/singer i had never heard of but a very catchy song.. Sounds incredibly like "Peter Gabriel". He is a Belgian/Australian and goes under the banner of "Gotye" and the song is called "somebody that i used to know" and is off the album "Making Mirrors". This video has had 11 million views.. That's impressive.

Strange name for a band..Furniture were a U.K group and scored the hit "brilliant mind" in 1986... unfortunately the band seemed to have a run of bad luck from various record company's. The thing that stands out for me in this song is the lyrics... nobody writes lyrics like this anymore... it's poetry at its best with a catchy but moody song, and a twang of a guitar now & then, sounding a cross between "Depeche Mode", "The Cure" with subtle hints of "New Order"... well, it does to me anyway. enjoy

Hello and welcome back.. In the late 80s i was lucky enough to be old enough to visit nightclubs when the acid scene was just coming out... This song is one of the first songs i heard. Vocals on this song are done by Yazz ( think "only way is up" ) with snippets from the tv show "Plastic man". This song made it to no6 in the music charts and stayed there for 4 weeks and was also on the compilation album "video hits"..
Classic acid with a pumping beat.. Love the 80s.

WA WA NEE - i could make you love me ( lost hit )

Hello and welcome back... As i write this, freezing my butt off ( -2deg tonight ), i have my headphones on cranking out the sounds of "WA WA Nee" ( strange name for a band ). This was the first album from this band that featured heavily on "countdown" (80s music show in Australia) which is were i first heard of them. Let loose in 1986 this self titled album had 4 singles available and i have chosen my favorite "i could make you love me". Strangely the overseas market was not so good, releasing the song "stimulation" to the American audience to a luke-warm reception... other singles includes "one and one" ( ain't good enough ) and "sugar free" but it's the pumping bass and screaming guitars in "i could make you love me" that takes me back to summer 86.. when it was warmer.. cheers.

TRAGIC ERROR - TANZEN

Hello and welcome back... Came across this track while looking for another song, love the deep bass synths, sounds excellent... think it's done in German?.
The main person in this band is "Patrick Demeyer" who is also know for his work on 90s bands "Technotronic", "T99" and "2 Unlimited" he also seems to have a fetish for statues and mannequins as seen in this video (kinky)
On a personal note , I've been fighting a  nasty cold/flu and have slowed down my posts.. i hate winter and with all the injury's i have.. it's a living hell.. good thing i have great music to listen to.. cheers

Hello and welcome back... Listening to a music special on triple j Sydney around 1987 , the subject was about synthesizers and emulators and the band "freeez" was featured heavily ... mainly this song. IOU was also used in the breakdance move "beatstreet" and went to no 2 in the UK in 1983... Love the use of the Roland SH101 synth ( i had one but sold it.. kicking myself ).. This song was kinda ahead of its time, getting a synth to sound like a human singing was cutting edge stuff in 1983 and is one of my favorites.

Hello and welcome back.. Around 1983-84 a new style was coming out of America with funky music and these amazing moves.. put it all together and you have "Breakdancing" add to that Movies like "Breakin"  and "Breakdance" ( the movie ) add artists like "Irene Cara", "Ollie & Jerry" & "The Rock Steady Crew" and your ready to make some moves. All you needed was a boom box and a smooth surface and you were set.
 I tried breakdancing when I was at school and nearly did just that.. break something.. my neck. but it was fun.
 Both the movies had soundtracks which were chocked full of dance and hip hop- electro funk classics.. re-live what I can no longer do.. Breakdance

PH D - wont let you down ( lost hit )

Hi again... This song is one of those songs that when i close my eyes it takes me back to my nans house at 3am... I used to listen to the radio all night because i was too scared or too exited at being in a lonely old house so i would lay awake all night and would often hear this song. The band PH D got their name from the band members last names ( phillips, hymas and diamond ) and the single "i wont let you down" was released in 1982. The lead singer Jim Diamond ended with hepatitis and soon split from the band but later went solo and sang the song "should have known better" in 1984. The assassin in the video of "i wont let you down" is the keyboard player Tony Hymas and is quiet funny at times.. bit like a storyline.

JOE SMOOTH - promised land ( lost hit )

Greetings again.. Staying in my nightclub years, i couldn't forget this song. Joe Smooth was a producer and dj and was a self taught musician, he started to create music at the age of 12. Joe is still a producer,remixer and engineer and has work with some big names including = "new order", "pet shop boys", "style council" and "destiny's child". In October 2004, "Promised Land" appeared in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas... one word describes this song.. smooooth.
