WALKMANS THAT IVE OWNED

Hello and welcome back.... My love of the Walkman (Personal Cassette Player).

I miss the Walkman.

Throughout the middle 80s till early 90s i was madly in love with my Walkman. I had several through the years. The best one was a Anniversary model from AIWA and was made in Japan.

It cost me a small fortune (around $800), for someone who pumped petrol for a living, it took a while to save up (about 6 months).

You could buy a gold model or a black model. I chose black because as i didn't want to get mugged (gold looked too flashy)
This thing was the ducks nuts of Walkmans, auto reverse, record from radio or built in mic (or plug in), all metal construction, amorphous head and leather case.
You could tell some serious work went into the design and build of these units from Japan.

As you can see from the pics above, they were a real work of art. This little walkman went everywhere with me.... Until, I was hit by a car going 80kmph early one morning on my way to work.
Sadly, i never seen it again. While i was laying on the road, dying (i died twice), bleeding internally, pelvis broken in 4 places.... Some shithead (excuse the french) stole my most prized possession. It was gone.

I had several since but none was the same as this model. I preferred AIWA over Sony units, the sound quality seemed better.
I owned several Sony, Phillips, Panasonic models but always went back to the AIWA models.

Their was something about Walkmans, they sounded amazing and looked amazing. The good ones played Normal, Chrome (my fav) and Metal tapes with a selection of 60, 90 or 120 mins to listen to. I usually used 60 min tapes because i found that the 90 or 120 min tapes would put too much stress on the motors / rubber bands.
You had to listen to the whole tape. Sure you could FF (Fast Forward) but you never really knew where you would end up, but you didn't mind because it sounded so good.
The auto-reverse was wicked. Finished one side and like magic would turn to the other side.

You could interact with your Walkman....  You could...
listen to the radio, preset channels for later use.
Change bias from Normal, Chrome and Metal / Dolby to hear the difference.
Add extra bass at the push of a button.
Fall asleep using the timer function to the sounds of Milli Vanilli,
Wake to the sounds of Milli Vanilli using the alarm function.

It was like your best friend.

I will put a few pics below of some of the various Walkmans i owned (that i can remember)

Lets hope in the near future, someone will bring back the Walkman... And hopefully will put some effort into it.
You can get a Walkman style tape player for around $49 dollars at the moment but its very basic. No auto reverse, no bias settings just a USB out for its claim to fame. Still its a start.

Vinyl Records are making a comeback so fingers (and legs) crossed.

Some Walkman's Ive owned and loved over the years.....

P.S Massive thanks to website Walkman-Archive.com for the memories / pics of these amazing units.

CANADIAN 80S - PART 1

Hello and welcome back.... Canada, famous for Maple Syrup, Ice Hockey and Beavers.

The music that was coming out of Canada in the 80s was awesome, they really know how to make a decent sound and its why I've decided to showcase some of Canada's finest electronic bands.

Its not a full list (see wikipedia for that one) but its one's that i like and particular songs that come under the electronic / new wave banner.

________ FM - JUST LIKE YOU _____________________________________________________

From 1985 came this track from the 'Con-Test' album and featured 'Nash the Slash' on vocals.
'Just like You' made it to No 38 on the Canadian charts.
Wicked sound... Check out that hair, wow

FM - JUST LIKE YOU

_____ MARTHA AND THE MUFFINS - ECHO BEACH __________________________________

Released to the world in 1980, this track was awesome, from the sultry sax inserts to a lead singer who plays synth, this song had a sound that stays in your mind for hours to come... and left you  wondering.. "Where is Echo Beach and how do i get there"

Made it to No5 in the Canadian Music charts (No6 in Australia / No10 in the U.K)

MARTHA AND THE MUFFINS - ECHO BEACH

_____ ROUGH TRADE - ALL TOUCH ________________________________________________

Holy shit, this song is wicked.... Fronted by a slightly scary front singer (Carole Pope), Canadian's Rough Trade had this smash hit back in 1981. The hard edge lyrics mixed with Carole's energetic vocal style made this track one of my Favs.
Made it to No 12 in the Canadian music charts.

ROUGH TRADE - ALL TOUCH

______ MEN WITHOUT HATS - SAFETY DANCE ______________________________________

Yes, its true... Canada is to blame for this one. Actually, its pretty good, if not slightly disturbing (watch the video) and begs the question, What the hell is the girl on?.. (because i want some).

Released to a unsuspecting world back in 1983, soon everyone was doing the 'Safety Dance' and if your friends didn't dance, well, they were no friends of mine... or, so the song goes.

Made it to No3 in the U.S music charts, No 11 in Canada and everyone was doing the Safety Dance in South Africa because it made it to No1 in their music charts.

MEN WITHOUT HATS - SAFETY DANCE

_____ STRANGE ADVANCE - WE RUN ______________________________________________

Having the same bass line as 'Wham - Last Christmas" (sounds like it to me), Strange Advance had this awesome hit back in 1985 and was from the album titled '2WO'

Heavy use of classic 80s synths including the Fairlight, Yamaha DX7, and Jupiter 8 meant that this band was going places, and they did... Straight to No28 on the Canadian music charts.

If you get the chance to get your hands on this album, its well worth it. Some seriously wicked tracks await you.

STRANGE ADVANCE - WE RUN

STAY TUNED FOR PART 2 NEXT WEEK (Hopefully) :)

BEST TRACKS Part two

Hello and welcome back.... Continuing with the 'Best Tracks' posts, what songs i love, can't stop listening to and why.
Sometimes a song is not just a song, there's meaning behind a particular sound or sometimes its the video, a lot of effort goes into some videos and they can make or break a track...Hope you enjoy

PROPAGANDA - DUEL

Such a amazing track, from 1985, German band 'Propaganda' had a huge hit with the track 'Duel'. Using the band Kraftwerk as inspiration, this track made it to No21 in the U.K music charts.
I love the vocals in this song, so powerful and rich and the various array of sounds that play through till the end... It deserves to be in this list, i love it.

PROPAGANDA - DUEL

THE ADVENTURES - SEND MY HEART

Why, Why, Why wasn't this track (and band) bigger than they were?. This track is pure heaven.
From the lush guitar work, the honey like vocals and the sweet melodies this is one track i can listen to over and over.
Came out around 1985 and was from the album 'Theodore and Friends'. Just about all the tracks on this album are brilliant, well worth adding to your collection if you don't already have it.

THE ADVENTURES - SEND MY HEART

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FUN FUN - BAILA BOLERO

Such a fun song, released around 1986 by Italio Disco outfit 'Fun Fun'.
Love the video, the 2 singers in the video makes this track even better. The girl in the black top really works the camera and looks stunning, as does the girl in the white top but she looks a little lost... now, where did that camera go?

FUN FUN - BAILA BOLERO

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JEAN BEAUVOIIR - FEEL THE HEAT

Another track where not only the song is wicked but so is the album its from. Jean Beauvoir's huge hit from 1986 called 'Feel the Heat' from the 'Drums Across the Mohawk' album. This track also featured in the closing credits on the Sylvester Stallone movie 'Cobra'... Its pure power, from the guitars, silky synths and that Mohawk, wow, awesome Mohawk.
Pump it up.

JEAN BEAUVOIR - FEEL THE HEAT

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VANESSA PARADIS - JOE LE TAXI

This track, i simply love. The sweet sound of soft synth, a little sax, and the honey like vocals of a very young 'Vanessa Paradis'. I think she was about 14 or 15 in this clip.
'Joe le Taxi' was written for Vanessa by two writers (Franck Langolff and Étienne Roda-Gil) about a taxi driver called Joe (obvious) who knows everything about France, likes rum and dreams of going to the Amazon. It made it to No2 in the U.K music charts (No1 in France) in 1987.
Close your eyes and be taken to sunny France on a summers afternoon.
Simply stunning

MY BEST TRACKS - Part One

Hello and welcome back.... I was asked the other day, 'Whats your favorite 80s track at the moment?', What song from the 80s do i love to listening to over and over again and never get sick of hearing?...

Well, there's a few, so i thought... Why not share with my 80s loving peeps out there, so here is a list of tracks that i love and why.

Never know, you may just hear a song you have never heard before and start you on a wonderful journey....

LIAN ROSS - FANTASY

Possibly my most favorite track at the moment, The bass sounds like it should come from a synth but in the video its done on guitar (love the hair), also there's a pretty big keytar as well (so 80s).
But its the synth sound that captures my mind, love the choir like sound and the little 3 claps (i used this method in my latest track).... Such a wicked song, so 80s, with lyrics you can sing to.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VALERIE DORE - THE NIGHT

From the opening scene (drugs anyone?) to the drummer who looks like he's thinking 'Are you friggin serious' (love the hair), This track by Italo Disco diva Valerie Dore is simple but effective. Has such an awesome sound.. love it
Must say, the DX7 (synth) player is lookin pretty swish...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BAD BOYS BLUE - COME BACK AND STAY

The first time i heard this track, i was getting a lift from a work college (he was Italian) and he had it playing on a tape in his car (i think he did a copy for me) but i lost it years ago. All i remember was the middle part where the singer says 'Oh Baby'... Thats it.
Fast forward 30 years or so and while listening to online radio station 'Polska Stacja, 80s and Italo Disco' I hear this song... Yes, i had found it again (crowd cheers)
Sadly 2 of the 3 male singers from this band are now deceased but its still an amazing sounding track to listen to.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ROXY MUSIC - SAME OLD SCENE

This is what i call Intelligent music, its been crafted with such skill, the sounds, the lyrics... pure Roxy Music.
The heavy use of the Prophet synth is one of the things that draws me to this track, those lush string sounds, then add the vocals of Brian Ferry, those sweet sounding vocals, its pure heaven.
Came out around 1982-3, I used to hear it often on my dads stereo, he was a huge Roxy fan, that, and at the time, Sydney radio station Triple M was starting to broadcast in stereo so it sounded even better on my AIWA Walkman as well.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TIME BANDITS - ENDLESS ROAD

This is the track i want to be played at my funeral. I so love this track, after all we are all on a endless road in life and spirit.
Love the synth sounds in this track, the little 3 note bits at the end of each line just adds to the overall ambiance to the track.
The video was done in Australia mostly around Gold Coast (Queensland) and Bondi Beach? (NSW) even though the Time Bandits were a dutch band.
Came out around 1985

MUSIC DOWNLOAD NOT WORKING

Hello and welcome back... Just a quick post to let you know that some of the music downloads are no longer active.
I was using Spreaker to host the downloads but i have been put back to 20 hours of airtime because i fail to upgrade, which is fair enough, but i just can't afford it... That's life
The ones i left behind are the bigger ones (ones with the most downloads).
The music downloads are on the right hand side of the page under 'Music Downloads' and i will slowly start taking the links off the page that are no longer active.
Cheers
Michael
