Hello and welcome back... From 1981 came this post punk / New Romantic track from UK band 'The Passions'
This was 'The Passions' only single to reach the charts peaking at No 25 in the U.K.
THE PASSIONS - IM IN LOVE WITH A GERMAN FILMSTAR (LIVE)
Hello and welcome back... Decide to start a section of posts dedicated to the sounds of the 80s.. The Synthesizers. Hey, you might even learn something.
One of my most Fav Syths of the 80s was this beast... The ROLAND JUPITER 8
Expensive as hell but oh so warm, the ability to split the keys in half was one of this bad boys traits (one side could play a bass arp while the other half could play strings..etc)... Oh, and you could layer the sounds as well.
Bands who used the 'Jupiter 8' (or JP8) included Duran Duran (Hungry like the Wolf), Frankie goes to Hollywood (Relax), Michael Jackson (Thriller), Roxy Music (Avalon), Vince Clarke (Yazoo), Depeche Mode, Devo, Jean Michel Jarre, Howard Jones, Tears for Fears, Talk Talk.. The list goes on and on.
Released in 1981 from Japan, The Jupiter 8 was an 8 voice polyphonic analogue synth, bonus features included an Arpeggio (arp) inc 'Random mode', Adjustable Portamento, Patch saving, Instrument layer and split modes, and an awesome Unison mode.
(for more in depth facts, check out the links below)
So, how does it sound?
Its warm, lush and Fat.. This synth has to heard to be believed.
If you want warm Strings.. Its got it.
If you want lush Special Effects.. Its got it.
If you want Fat Bass sounds.. Its got that too..
No wonder it was so popular.. Oh, and it very heavy
Its often labeled as "The Prettiest Synth ever Made"
They stopped making the 'Jupiter 8' in 1985
No Midi was available but you could get a 'Patch' cord... An upgrade was later available as well
Today, a second hand Jupiter 8 can cost around $2000 - $5000
Cant afford a real 'Jupiter 8' but want to experience the lush fat sounds?
French company 'Arturia' has released a software version that is practically an exact replica of the Jupiter8 and it sounds incredible.
Called The 'Jupiter-8V' (see below)
The presets (400 of them) that come with the Jupiter-8V is mind blowing.. Prepare to spend 'hours' lost in this baby.
Costs around $100 and midi compatible and can be used as stand alone (VSTI) or VST
JUPITER-8V
Personally, I have used the Arturia Jupiter-8V in my music (Dream Sequence) and find it one of the best software synthesizers on the market, Midi this to a Midi keyboard (I use the Arturia Analogue Experience and M-Audio Keystation) and you have the closest replica to the real Jupiter 8..
Hello and welcome back...UK all girl band 'The Belle Stars' released this track in 1983 after a series of cover songs inc 'The Clapping Song' & Iko Iko.
The 'Sign of the Times' made it to No 3 in the UK, 45 in Australia and even made it into American charts at No 75.
This single came from the bands only album "Sign of the Times"
In 1984 the band broke up... A sign of the times?
Hello and welcome back... Something different, a alternative version of Madonna's 'Like a Virgin'... Its Different, Very Different... Released in 1985
New Wave band 'Lords of the new Church' consists of ex-The Damned (Brian James), The Dead Boys (Stiv Bators), The Barracudas (Nick Turner) and Sham 69 (Dave Tregunna)...
4 albums were released until 1988 when they split.
UK band 'Vitamin Z' released this song back in 1985 and it was from the album 'Rights of Passage'.
What i like about this track is its raw emotion, starts with the stunning metallic sound of a particular guitar (its the black one with no end bits) and then the vocals of Geoff Barradale kick in. This guy has an amazing voice. The bass guitarist is Nick Lockwood. Then there's the video... Pretty girl once went out with the lead singer but now goes out with the bass guitarist, Bass guitarist doesn't know about this but soon works out that the song their playing is about the same girl... You can feel the tension as the bass player glances at the singer and the girl and eventually walks off not too impressed... Kinda like a slippery love triangle... genius. VITAMIN Z - BURNING FLAME (1985)
LYRICS
Walking out tonight
In the street lights I can see you,
Arm in arm with just another guy,
You look at me and wave hello, how friendly
I look at you and the cars go passing by.
I understand that you used to love me,
Nothing much but it made you cry,
So here we are making pleasant gestures,
And I just can't see the reason why.
Me and you we never made it far girl,
Now I laugh at the promises we made,
And something went
The first time that I hurt you,
The lights went out
And the memories start to fade.
And all along on my trip to nowhere,
You annoyed me with your foolish games,
And how you teased when I first made love,
And I'm left so naked like a burning flame,
Burning flame, burning flame.
And all along on my trip to nowhere,
You annoyed me with your foolish games,
And how you teased when I first made love,
And I'm left so naked like a burning flame,
Burning flame, burning flame.
I felt the earth fall apart and crumble,
All my dreams down they fell,
And would an angel show mercy to the devil,
But you're under my skin and you know darn well.
Walking out tonight in the street lights I can see you
Arm in arm with just another guy,
You look at me and wave hello-how friendly,
I look at you and the cars go passing by.
