AUSTRALIAN CRAWL - WHITE LIMBO

Hello and welcome back.. Not necessarily a electronic band but in this track, a heavy use of electronic drums?, well it sounds like it.

From the 1983 'Semantics' album, White Limbo has be one of my fav songs from Aust Crawl along with the track 'Reckless' also from this album.

White Limbo has an amazing sound acoustics when played on a good set of headphones or speakers. Sadly White Limbo was not released as a single..  Check it out (Oh, Those Drums) :)

ATOMIC BLONDE SOUNDTRACK

Hello and welcome back... A few posts back, i mentioned a new movie out called Atomic Blonde.

Its a movie based in Germany 1989.

I managed to go see Atomic Blonde at the movies and can say, its brilliant movie... Gritty, hard edged and a wicked soundtrack to boot.

The best track... That's a difficult one -
New Order - Blue Monday is excellent but i would have to say Re-Flex - Politics of Dancing, this song is played at a nightclub and at the start of a sex scene.
That bassline is to die for.

SOUNDTRACK LIST
1. Cat People (Putting Out the Fire) – David Bowie
2. Major Tom (Völlig Losgelöst) – Peter Schilling
3. Blue Monday – Health
4. C*Cks*Cker – Tyler Bates
5. 99 Luftballons – Nena
6. Father Figure – George Michael
7. Der Commissar – After the Fire
8. Cities in Dust – Siouxsie and the Banshees
9. The Politics of Dancing – Re-Flex
10. Stigmata – Marilyn Manson & Tyler Bates
11. Demonstration – Tyler Bates
12. I Ran (So Far Away) – A Flock of Seagulls
13. 99 Luftballons – Kaleida
14. Voices Carry – Til Tuesday
15. London Calling – The Clash
16. Finding the Uhf Device – Tyler Bates

J. GEILS BAND - COME BACK

Hello and welcome back... Love this, amazing sound.

From the 'Love Stinks' album from 1980 came this wicked track, heavy on the synths and those guitars... WOW

Its pretty good, considering in 1980, Synths were not that predominant in main stream music, where rock and punk still lived...

A sign of things to come? Yes it was.

Play LOUD :)

J.GEILS BAND - COME BACK  (1980)

'Come Back' made it to #24 in the Canadian music charts. #32 U.S, #34 Australia.

Sadly in April 2017, John J. Geils (lead Guitars), passed away, he was 71 years young.  RIP

SINITTA - SINITTA! (1987)

Hello and welcome back...Very rare album but one of my favs.

Self titled album from U.K singer 'Sinitta', released in 1987. Rare because this very hard to find. I had this album on cassette back around 1988 and only now have i found a copy of the original album. Some other albums are available but are re-recorded and sound crap.
This is the original 1987 album

Half the album was produced by SAW (Stock, Aitken & Waterman) sounding similar to early Kylie Minogue.

Singles from this album were Toy Boy, GTO, Cruising, Cross my Broken Heart, Feels Like the First Time and the smash hit 'So Macho'.

So Macho made it to #2 in the U.K music charts, Toy Boy was #4 (U.K)

BANDS REUNITED - KAJAGOOGOO

Can 80s band 'Kajagoogoo' get back together after 30 years apart?
Will Limahl rejoin the band after all these years?

BANDS REUNITED - KAJAGOOGOO

KAJAGOOGOO - TOO SHY

Hello and welcome back... From the 1983 album 'White Feathers' came this awesome track.

Too Shy was the 2nd track on the album (Track one in the U.S. & Canada), with 10 tracks in total.

2 things sets this song for me... First was the lead singer 'Limahl', that magic voice set the tone who would later go on to do the lead track in the movie soundtrack for 'Never Ending Story'.

Second thing that makes this song / album a totally Rad experience for me is the heavy use of the Electronic Drums (the sound that made the 80s).. its what i love about the 80s and the whole album is chock full of those Simmons drum sounds.

Sadly after this album, Limahl left the band.

On a good note, Kajagoogoo (including Limahl) are currently together and are touring around the U.K.

SHONA LAING - GLAD IM NOT A KENNEDY

Hello and welcome back... Released in 1985 from N.Z musician 'Shona Laing', Glad I'm not a Kennedy made it to #2 in the music charts (N.Z)

Glad I'm not a Kennedy was from the album 'South'. Also on this album was the track 'Drive baby Drive', another fav of mine.

In 2013, Shona won a Legacy music award  for her work.

SHONA LAING - GLAD I'M NOT A KENNEDY

LYRICS
Living on through politics
Body-guarded, heart in bits
A blue-eyed honesty
Indigo injury
The family tree is felled
Bereavement worn so well
Giving up on certainty
Wilderness society

Wearing the fame like a loaded gun
Tied up with a rosary
I'm glad I'm not a Kennedy
Imagine being a Kennedy
Rule without remedy
To watch your family die
The world loves a sacrifice
Prophets longing for the three
Honoring the tragedy
They hunger for the crime
The privilege to take a life

Wearing the fame like a loaded gun
Tied up with a rosary
Ooh, I'm glad I'm not a Kennedy, glad im not a Kennedy

And is not peace basically
A matter of human rights?
The right to live out our lives
Without fear of devastation?
The right to breathe air
As nature provided it?
The right of future generations
To a healthy existence?
Let us if we can step back from
The shadows of war and seek out
The way of peace

I love the look in your eyes
I can see your soul sometimes and we laugh
When we try too hard we stop and start
Oh imagine being a Kennedy
I'm glad I'm not a Kennedy

Wearing the fame like a loaded gun
Tied up with a rosary
I'm glad I'm not a Kennedy
Imagine being a Kennedy
Ooh I'm glad I'm not a Kennedy

The cost of freedom is always high,
Yet one path we shall never choose
That is the path of surrender or submission.
When a man's way please the lord,
The scriptures tell us,
He maketh even his enemies
To be at peace with him'.
We will not prematurely or unnecessarily
Risk the course of worldwide nuclear war
In which even the fruits of victory
Would be ashes in our mouths
Ashes in our mouths
Ashes in our mouths
Ashes in our mouths

REMASTERING THE 80s

Hello and welcome back... As record company's fight to keep their heads above water, one wonders whats next in the world of music.

Lets face it, CDs are dead.

Dead technology. Released in the mid 80s, these discs of 16bit 44,100Hz have had their day.
Or have they?

Currently, their is a surge of music lovers looking to go one step better (me included) with 24bit / 96-192Khz HD music... Basically, its double the information found on a CD.
24Bit music is often stored on a computer as a format, mainly FLAC or WAV and is large in size.
A normal MP3 song is often about 3-5MB where as a HD Flac song is about 80-95MB in size.
A full size HD album can be 800MB to 3.GB for DVD-Audio.

A while ago, Sony released the SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc) which kinda failed, mostly because you needed to buy a SACD Player, but are currently experience a resurgence.

So the record company's have found a solution... Remastered Albums, either downloaded as 24bit files or on a new release CD's.
Add more info to a disc and you have DVD-Audio and 5.1 Surround Music.

These new Re-Mastered albums are often copied from Master Tapes and then given the 24bit / 96Khz treatment... suddenly sounds that were lost or squashed on a standard CD are now allowed to spread their wings and be separated just like as if you were listening to them in the recording studio

BUT is it any good?

Below is video of 80s band Toto with the track Africa which has been downloaded from a 5.1 SACD remixed and remixed to stereo.
Its best to listen on a good set of headphones. (be sure to set 720p in Youtube settings)

If your like me, you should be able to hear a marked improvement. Bass sounds heavier, vocals and guitars are crisp and in the chorus, i can hear a faint guitar i couldn't hear before.

While Youtube often down-samples the sound, its still a marked improvement.
I imagine the original CD it was recorded off would be a real feast for the ears.

SOME MORE SAMPLES

Stunning sound, love this...

The only downside i can see with this, if you want to purchase a HD SACD, they cost about $80 (even more if they are imported from Japan)

Just recently, i downloaded from Itunes, the Re-Mastered album from Canadian band Rush, their 1985 album 'Power Windows'.
The album is in a Itunes Remastered format know as AAC / 256kbps / 44.100Khz.
While the file size doesn't look impressive, it does sound pretty good.... Its secret is that it has a 32Bit float behind the sound which leaves a well polished (low distortion & noise) with good bass response.

While some people might say that Re-Mastering is nothing but hype / gimmick, I beg to differ but everyone is different.

Somethings to check to get the best sound available =

Headphones - Some headphones are branded for HD Music.
I am using a pair of Sony Headphones mostly because the publish the frequency range on the box (this is helpful).
Most headphones only cover 20-20,000hz, where as the headphones i have cover 8-25,000hz (this is good because it allows the frequency's of music to be spread across the spectrum). The lower number (8hz) is for Bass, human hearing stops around 12hz so if a sound goes lower, it becomes more a feeling (that thump bass makes) than a sound you can hear.
25,000hz is the high end (very crispy up here).
They needn't be expensive (mine cost about $125) but obviously, brands like Shure, Sony & Bose are going to be better than a cheap pair of $9 headphones.

Setup your Computer - Go to your soundcard settings (control panel - sound and hardware) and under speakers / headphones, go to properties - advanced and click on default format and set toggle to 24bit / 96,000hz (studio quality)... you can click 'Test' to see if your computer can take this setting... if it sounds fine, click apply then OK to save.
Make sure you also have the latest sound drivers for your computer (mine is Realtek), often found when doing a windows update or going to Realtek website

PROGRAMS
I like Apple Itunes, its easy to get around, has a store to buy more albums and you can rip your CDs using AAC (better than MP3) at 320kbps.
Problem is Apple does not support FLAC HD files (boooo)

Windows Media Player (no longer updated)

VLC Player does (its free and covers Mac and other formats).. Click Here to download

Music Bee is another player i like, has a good layout and music is set automatically to 32bit and can also be set to 5.1 Audio as well
It can also import CDs to FLAC (and other formats including WAV) on the fly and burn to CDs as well.
Music Bee also handles WASAPI (Windows Audio Session API) and ASIO drivers for a even better sound experience.
WASAPI and ASIO drivers bypass computer sound setting and play direct from music = cleaner, higher bit sound.
http://www.asio4all.com/ (asio drivers)
https://sourceforge.net/projects/foobar2000-wasap2-output/ (wasapi / asio drivers)
Once downloaded, go to MusicBee edit - preferences - player... here you can use the dropdown box to change to Wasapi / Asio drivers if you want, tick 32bit output, upmix stereo to 5.1, resample to 96k.
https://getmusicbee.com/downloads/

Another good program called Foobar2000 also handles HD Audio (FLAC)
http://www.foobar2000.org/download

WHERE CAN YOU GET ALBUMS?
Apple Itunes sells Re-Mastered albums...

There is a site called HD-Tracks that has some really good albums but sadly does not allow Australians to download... Pretty pathetic, like our money is not good enough.. Shame, The site looks really good.. http://www.hdtracks.com/

Make your own = using MusicBee or Foobar2000, you can import your own CDs and set the rip to FLAC or WAV (highest setting)

Band websites sometime offer albums that have been Re-Mastered, and the money goes directly to the band.. www.rushbackstage.com is one of the sites.
http://www.rushbackstage.com/rushbackstage/media-260/compact-discs/index.html

Bandcamp & Soundcloud = some new artists are offering albums in 24bit sound.

JB HI-FI stores

Ebay has some bargains

Anyone Else have any suggestions?? Comment below..

In the next few posts on Electronic80s (this site :)) covering the Classix Album Series, i will post a few HD albums so you can hear what i am talking about.
Try not to re-format the downloaded albums on offer ( i sometimes re-format downloaded albums from MP3 to AAC).. Leave as is otherwise you will lose sound information.
COMING SOON....

RUSH - TIME STANDS STILL

Hello and welcome back.... 3 things i love about the band 'Rush' in the 80s

1. At the start of the 80s, Rush Drummer 'Neil Peart' started incorporating electronic drums into their music.

2. Also, the start of the 80s, the band started to introduce more synthesizers into their music, depending who you talk to, this was either a good thing or a bad thing... (i say good because i love synths but die hard rock fans weren't impressed)

3. Their music sounds different... If you have ever heard of Rush, you will know that their writing style is amazing, the song changes so many times and i think, this is what keeps their music interesting.
Time Stands Still is from their 1987 album 'Hold Your Fire' and is a good example of Rush's writing style and dare i say, one of their best tracks...

Part of the chorus of Time Stands Still is sung by Til Tuesday's 'Aimee Mann' (Think Voices Carry)

80s TV SHOWS - NEW WEBSITE

Hello and welcome back... I have started a new website..

Lately, i have been catching up on some 80s TV shows.
TV shows like Magnum P.I, The A-Team, Airwolf, Steethawk, Miami Vice & Knight Rider... Just to name a few and it got me to thinking.

Wouldn't it be great to have a website that has all these great 80s TV shows all in the one place?
So I have created this site = 80s TV SHOWS

First show under the spotlight is Airwolf :)

The idea is to make available the pilot (first) episode and then another good episode available so you can remember what these awesome shows were about.

In regards to copyright, I don't plan on pirating episodes, its for fair use only, just to remember.
Sure, if you like what you see then go out and buy (if they're available) the seasons on DVD.

I would also like to ask for a 'Buy me a Coffee' donation, any amount big or small is much appreciated. Its also great for motivation :)  and to know that what i'm doing, that someone out there, appreciates the time and effort required to do these sites.

Hope you like the new site

Electronic drums used on this album and fairly synth heavy (which i love)

If you like 80s band 'The Police, Genesis or U2' you should like this album..
There is no such thing as a 'bad' Rush album... 9/10 for me.

FOTOSTAT - BRAVE NEW WORLD

Hello and welcome back... Early 80s (1982), and the world was dreaming robots, drum machines and synths.
Brave new world was ahead of its time with hints of Kraftwerk, Gary Numan, John Foxx & Visage.

Formed in the U.K, 'Fotostat' consisted of brothers 'Glenn & Mark Robertson'... at one stage featured  in a Technics stereo commercial... cool

KAREN FINLEY - LICK IT

Hello and welcome back... I'll be honest with you

I've had never heard of this song, the only way i knew it existed was because, part of 'Lick It' was used in a S-Express song (S-Express theme) and the Italo Song '49ers - Girl to Girl'

The chant of 'Lick me Good, Like you Should' carries on through both songs...

U.S artist Karen Finley released this track back in 1988 to the gasp of society, to put it bluntly..She made 'Madonna - Like a Virgin' look mild. (it was the 80s folks)
Speaking of Madonna, Mark Kamins (dec) who worked on this track was also Madonna's collaborator. Sadly Mark passed away in 2013

NOTES = One of my Fav bands..
Blending rhythmic guitars, Strong Vocals, & Sweeping Synths I'm surprised this band wasn't bigger than they were.
Formed in Melbourne (Australia), Dear Enemy came out of the gates too fast and shot on the charts with the track 'Computer One' (#5 Aust Charts).
Sadly what goes up must come down and even know 'Ransom Note' was an excellent album, they couldn't catch the same train that took them to the top spot.

In 1999, The album 'Ransom Note and Beyond' was released adding 9 extra tracks being...
New Hero
Stay
Your Right Your Right
It was you I was looking For
Hold On
Wild Child
Love Flows
Looking For your Love
In the heat of the Night

Currently, the album 'Ransom Note and Beyond' (CD) is available on website Discogs for $540..

I have this album on CD and not selling :)

CLASSIX ALBUMS - NEW SEGMENT (UPDATE)

Hello and welcome back... New segment on Electronic80s called 'Classix Albums'

What is Classix Albums?

Classix Albums are albums that I like.. I can listen to the album from first track till the end with no bad songs in-between.

A Classic Album may have been an album that was popular back in the 80s but just because it had a few hit songs, but it doesn't make it a Classix Album.

The Australian market was different to the U.K or American market so some albums you may not have heard before... Enjoy, You may stumble across something new.

*** UPDATE*** Look for the link on the page so you can have a listen... Im using dropbox..
When the popup says to sign in, sroll down the bottom where it says 'No Thanks, Continue to Download' then go to top right corner and click Download.

File is in AAC format (i use iTunes) The sound quality is better than MP3..

The download file will only last for 1 week, to save on space.  GET IN QUICK
