STEVIE NICKS - I CAN'T WAIT (lost hit)

Hello and welcome back.....Taking a break from Fleetwood Mac, this 1985 hit from Stevie Nicks (Stephanie Lynn "Stevie" Nicks) "I Can't Wait" was from the album "Rock A Little".
The song "Talk To Me" was from the same album.
Another Favourite of mine is "Stand Back", love the magic synths and that voice, Stevie's voice is just Heaven

MODERN TALKING

Hello and welcome back.... German band "Modern Talking" formed in 1984, and was fronted by Thomas Anders (lead vocals, piano) & Dieter Bohlen (lead guitar, producer).
Their music often went under the banner of Europop.

In 1987 the band split up, but reformed in the late 90s
During the split Dieter Bohlen formed the band "Blue System"

Modern Talking brought out a slather of albums through their career, during the 80s the band brought out 6 albums (2 each year).
In 1985, The albums were = The First Album & Lets Talk about Love.
In 1986, These albums graced our ears = Ready for Romance & In the Middle of Nowhere.
In 1987, These albums were set free = Romantic Warriors & In the Garden of Venus

For me the song "Your my Heart, Your my Soul" caught my attention, swooning lyrics with melodic guitars and synths..... And the Hair, then again, It was the 80s
Sadly, Modern Talking wasn't that big here in Australia but I do remember hearing the song "Brother Louie" now and then.
Other songs that were popular in the 80s were "You can Win if you Want", "Cheri, Cheri Lady", "Atlantis is calling (S.O.S. For Love)", & "Geronimo's Cadillac".

A classic example of the best 80s Europop.... Enjoy.

BLACK - EVERYTHING'S COMING UP ROSES (lost hit)

Hello and welcome back.... The band "Black" was the creation from one man.... British singer-songwriter "Colin Vearncombe". Black had a huge hit in 1987 with the song "Wonderful Life", a moody ballad that reached No8 in the UK music charts.
The 1986 song "Everything's Coming Up Roses" which I think is a awesome song flopped on the music charts.

But we, at Electronic 80s don't care if it didn't chart well, we just like to remember so enjoy... Black

ELECTRONIC DRUM KITS - 80s STYLE

Hello and welcome back....To me, nothing screams 80s than the sound of an electronic drum kit used in a song. Just about every synth driven band in the 80s used a Electronic drum kit to give them that edgy new wave sound.
Bands like Pseudo Echo, Real Life, Naked Eyes, Kajagoogoo, Talk Talk & Thompson Twins used drum kits sometime in their career.
Even more hard rock bands like Def Leppard used a modified Simmons Drum kit on the Hysteria album after their drummer (Rick Allen) lost his arm in a car accident.

Most drum kits consists of various rubber pads that send a signal to a electronic module that can change the sound.

Below, The band Koo De Tah used a Electronic drum kit to give that amazing 80s sound

Love this band :)

The first drum kit was used by the band The Moody Blues and quickly caught on, soon other bands in the late 70s - early 80s started using drum kits.
The first successful brand of drum machine was made by Simmons which made the SDS-5 (SDSV), it was released in 1981.
Early bands like Spandau Ballet and Duran Duran couldn't get enough of that dzzshhh dzzshhh sound that made a drum machine so distinctive.
Soon, other brands caught on with Roland and Yamaha making various drum kits.
Newer drum kits replaced the rubber pads with metal mesh pads for a funkier new sound.

Rick Allen (Def Leppard) with a modified Simmons drum kit.

So in this post....Electronic80s salutes The Electronic Drum Kit.

MY TOP 10 BANDS THAT USE A ELECTRONIC DRUM KIT

1 = GENESIS - the Brazillian

2 =DEF LEPPARD - Pour some Sugar on me

3=PSEUDO ECHO - Stranger in Me

PETE SHELLEY

Hello and welcome back....Pete Shelley (aka Peter Campbell McNeish) was best known as a singer & guitarist in the 70s punk band "The Buzzcocks".
I first heard Pete Shelley on a compilation album called 1982 With A Bullet, with the song "Homosapien"... Moving away from guitar orientated sounds and replacing them with a synthesizer.
The BBC banded the song "Homosapien" due to the references to gay sex.
The song "Telephone Operator" is a personal favorite of mine, I love the raw sounding synths, Its an excellent song.
Enjoy

ASIA - HEAT OF THE MOMENT (lost hit)

Hello and welcome back....Asia was born from other members from different bands, the one who caught my eye was the Synth player, Geoff Downs, who was from the band Buggles (Video killed the Radio Star).
Other refugees that called Asia home came from bands like Yes, King Crimson & Emerson Lake & Palmer.
Hitting the top 5 in the music charts, the song Heat of the Moment was one of my favourite songs around 1982 and still remains to this day....An excellent example of old school bands moving to mainstream and what they can achieve.

THE CARS

Hello and welcome back.... Fronted by Ric Ocasek, the U.S band "The Cars" were a huge part of the 80s.
Standing beside Ric was "Benjamin Orr" (lead vocals, bass) who in sadly died in year 2000 from cancer.
Benjamin was the voice behind hits like "Just what I needed", "Lets Go" & "Drive"
Other band members included Elliot Easton (guitars), Greg Hawkes (Synths) & David Robinson (drums).

The Cars released 3 albums in the 80s, those being "Shake It Up(1981)", "Heartbeat City(1984)" & "Door to Door(1987)".
Door to Door was the last to feature Benjamin Orr, before his death. There would not be another Cars studio album until the 2011 release of Move Like This.

I was a huge fan of The Cars mainly because the of the various synthesizer sounds with nearly every song sounding different and refreshing.

The Cars belted out 80s hits like "Shake it up", "Since your Gone", "Hello Again", "Magic", "Drive", "You Might Think", "Its Not The Night" & "Heartbeat city".
My Favorite song would have to be "You are the Girl", with its melodic synths and lush vocals its a song I never get sick of hearing, It also reminds me of a girl I once knew when I was at school at that time & yes she was the girl of my dreams....But Shhhh, don't tell anyone. :)

COMMODORES - nightshift (lost hit)

Hello and welcome back....After the death in 1984 of both R&B singers "Jackie Wilson" & "Marvin Gaye", A band called the Commodore's (missing Lionel Richie) released the tribute song "Nightshift" back in 1985.
This song reach No3 in the U.S music charts.

For me, this song is smooth & classy with meaningful lyrics, a true classic of the 80s.
Something that both Jackie and Marvin would be proud of.

MACHINATIONS - cars & planes (club mix)

Hello and welcome back..... I gave up waiting for this song to make it to Youtube so it uploaded it myself. This is one of my most faviourite songs of the 80s.
Australian band "Machinations" released the song "Cars & Planes" back in 1989.
Sorry for the crap video, I just wanted to get the song live so I found some photos of my car I used to own, affectionately know as "Betsy" (A 1992 KH Ford Laser).
The song was recorded from tape but the sound quality is good :).
Enjoy a very rare song

THE REELS - bad moon rising (lost hit)

Hello and welcome back.....Walking through Sydney in the early nineties I stumbled across this band playing live at a open air concert. The band was "The Reels" and they were belting out the song "Bad Moon Rising", it literately made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, they were that good. The photo that you see on the left was taken by myself using a old Nikon film camera (remember them).
What got my attention apart from the excellent song was the strange sound the synth player was making with a mouth piece which made sea like sounds, even to this day I still don't know what it is called.
This song sound great with a good set of headphones, just close your eyes and be swept away :)

MACHINATIONS - no say in it (the tapeaters remix)

Hello and welcome back.... Sometimes when you hear a song that has been remixed, I often think.."Great, they killed it", not so with this song.... Its catchy and keeps to the original song. An excellent song just got better.

MACHINATIONS - NO SAY IN IT  (THE TAPEATERS REMIX)

ALPHAVILLE - i die for you today (sounds like the 80s)

Hello and welcome back.... Just found this song while looking for something else, can't stop listening to it. Alphaville released an album back in 2010 (how did I miss that?) called "Catching Rays on Giant" and this song is the second track. The original singer is still the voice that you can hear (Marian Gold).
Its great to hear 80s bands that are making a comeback.

ROLAND TB-303

Hello and welcome back.... The Roland TB-303 was born in 1982 and changed the sound of electronic dance music. The TB (Transistorized Bass) 303 was a bass synthesizer with a built in sequencer. It was released in the western world from japan to replace a bass guitar. It originally failed, selling only 10 thousand units but it resurfaced in the late 80s (Detroit) as a serious acid dance/techno house synth. By changing a series of knobs on the 303 you could get a sticky acid sound that sounds very futuristic.
Bands that have used the TB-303 are Heaven 17, The KLF,  Phuture and 808 State and just about any band with the word acid in it :)

LIMAHL - never ending story (Lost Hit)

Hello and welcome back.... Christopher Hamill (Limahl) first shot to fame in 1982 with the band "Kajagoogoo".
Limahl decided to go solo in 1984 and sang the main theme for the movie "Neverending Story".
The rest of the music for "Neverending Story" was done by Giorgio Moroder (Electric Dreams).

For me, this song (and movie) was one of my favorites, I could relate to running away and disappearing to another world to save a princess. Sadly this never happened, but the movie made me believe that anything was possible.
I have watched this movie over 30 times and still love it.

KORG EMX-1 - in real time

AT Electronic80s we salute the Korg EMX-1 played amazingly by "Danielle" with the song "In Real Time"

She makes it look so easy... Brilliant

MODERN TALKING - brother louie (lost hit)

Hello and welcome back...German synthpop band "Modern Talking" had a huge hit with this song in 1986.
Brother Louie was released on the "Ready for Romance" album and made it to top 5 in the U.K music charts.

For me I couldn't get into their music, maybe too much hair for me or maybe the music was too cheesy for me, I don't know, but they were huge so who am I to argue.
15 million youtube viewers cant be wrong :).. Enjoy.

BELINDA CARLISLE - feel like i feel (lost hit)

Hello and welcome back....2 things make this song special to me, Firstly, it was the first time I got to spend the night with my first "Real" girlfriend (at the time) much to my mothers horror. Nervously driving home the morning after, I turned the stereo on in my car and heard this song and it has stuck in my head ever since. (My mum grounded me for 2 weeks).
The second reason is that the stunning "Belinda Carlisle" has the same birthday as me...August 17th, so Happy Birthday to Belinda and to myself.... 21 again :)

RIC OCASEK

Hello and welcome back.... Rick Ocasek ( Richard T Otcasek) is best known as the frontman in the band "The Cars".
Rick was born in Baltimore, Maryland,  USA, and when he was a young lad joined a folk band called "Milkwood" with fellow Cars member Ben Orr ( Ben Orzechowski).

Sadly Benjamin Orr died in year 2000 from pancreatic cancer.

Rick has been married 3 times and met his latest wife (Paulina Porizkova) on the set of the video shoot of "Drive" (cars song), while still married to his second wife... Complicated, huh.

Rick has produced 7 studio albums to date but his best album in my opinion would be "This Side of Paradise".
This album was set free on the general population in 1986 and included the hits "Keep on Laughing", "True to You", "Emotion in Motion", and my pick of the album "True Love" with its moody synths and and the distinctive voice of Rick, its a song I could listen to over & over.

The song Jimmy Jimmy was also excellent but was on the album " Beatitude" 1982

Steve Stephens from Billy Idol's band plays guitars on most most songs from this album.

Roland Orzabal (Tears For Fears) played guitar on the song "Emotion in Motion"

I will do a post on "The Cars" soon :)

MIKE & THE MECHANICS

Hello and welcome back.... Mike & the Mechanics was formed as a side project by Mike Rutherford (Genesis).
The band started in 1985 and included singer Paul Carrack, Paul Young (singer), Adrian Lee(keyboard player) & Peter Van Hooke (drums).

Singer Paul Young died in July 2000 from a heart attack.

Mike & the Mechanics have released 7 albums to date and include songs like "Silent Running", "All I Need is a Miracle", "Nobody's Perfect", "The Living Years", "Nobody Knows" & "Word of Mouth"

Song "The Living Years" was penned by Mike Rutherford after the death of his father.

My favorite album from Mike & the Mechanics would be their 1985 album (self titled) because it includes the song "Par Avion"... A haunting song, with mellow synths and the amazing  voice of Paul Carrack.
Why this song was never a single I will never know.

Mike & the Mechanics are a multi-talented band with some of the best songs of the 80s.

PAR AVION ................. brings a small tear to your eye

SILENT RUNNING

ALL I NEED IS A MIRACLE

NOBODY'S PERFECT

THE LIVING YEARS

NOBODY KNOWS

SYLVESTER ( ft PATRICK COWLEY ) - do you wanna funk

Hello and welcome back.... Another song I thought I had already done but no.... I have been slack.
This powerhouse of a song graced our radio's back in 1982, "Sylvester" (Sylvester James) was the singer and it was produced by "Patrick Cowley".
Patrick died the same year this song was released (1982)
Sylvester died in 1988
Previous to his death, Patrick also had hits with "Menergy" and "Megatron Man"
I head this song on a CD last night while picking up my daughter from work, while the music was playing, bass was pumping, the back door was slightly open so it was like my own private disco as the interior light was flickering on & off.... Hhhmm... you had to be there.

SYLVESTER - DO YOU WANNA FUNK

PATRICK COWLEY - MANERGY

PATRICK COWLEY - MEGATRON MAN  (love this song )

The song "Do you wanna funk" was heard in the 80s movie "Trading Places" with Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd.

KRISTINE - modern love ( sounds like the 80s )

Hello and welcome back....Modern music is making a comeback to the great sounds of the 80s.
"Modern love" by Greek singer "Kristine" has that great 80s sound written all over it, to its smooth flowing synths, great vocals and edgy drums, you can just close your eyes and pretend that it is 1984....I did.
"Kristine" has a slather of 80s goodness available on her SoundCloud page so be sure to check it out.
An incredible singer that sounds like she just stepped out of her Delorian from 1984 and into a Dance Club. Excellent
